School Name Labels: Iron-On vs Sew-In vs Embroidered (Honest UK Guide)

Every September, the same question lands in our inbox: what's the best way to label school uniform so it actually comes home again? We've tried all three on real school years. Here's the honest verdict.
Iron-on labels
Cheap, fast and great for a busy back-to-school week. Press them on with a hot iron and you're done in 20 minutes.
- Pros: cheapest, fastest, no sewing skills needed
- Cons: edges lift after 20–30 washes, especially on PE kit and polos
- Best for: PE kits, plimsolls, water bottles, lunchboxes
Sew-in labels
The traditional choice. Stitched into the side seam or collar. Slower to apply but they outlast the garment.
- Pros: indestructible, washes forever, works on any fabric
- Cons: takes time per garment, needs basic sewing
- Best for: jumpers, blazers, cardigans — anything that'll last 2+ years
Embroidered names (directly onto the garment)
The premium option — and the one parents quietly love. The child's name is stitched directly onto the inside collar, sleeve cuff or chest. No label to peel, lift or itch.
- Pros: looks beautiful, survives the entire school career, no irritation against skin, brilliant on book bags and PE bags
- Cons: slightly more expensive per item, needs to be ordered ahead
- Best for: school jumpers, PE bags, book bags, coats — the items that get lost most often
Our honest recommendation
Mix all three. Iron-on for PE kit and lunchbox. Sew-in for the school jumper. Embroidered names directly onto the book bag, PE bag and coat — those are the items that walk off and never come back without a name visible from across the playground.
